I. Biblical Evidence That Michael is Christ
The name Michael means “Who is like God?”, implying a divine nature. The term "Archangel" means "chief of the angels", not a created angel but their commander.
1. Michael is the Leader of the Heavenly Host
Revelation 12:7-9 – “And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not.”
Michael leads his angels against Satan and his angels.
Christ is consistently described as the leader of the heavenly host (Joshua 5:13-15, Matthew 26:53).
If Michael has his own angels, He must be the commander of heaven’s armies—this role belongs to Christ (Revelation 19:11-14).
2. Michael Has Power Over Death
Jude 9 – “Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.”
Only Jesus has power over death (John 11:25, Revelation 1:18).
Moses was resurrected (seen in Matthew 17:1-3 at the Transfiguration), and Michael is the one who contended for his body, indicating He is the Resurrection and the Life—a title that belongs to Christ alone.
3. Michael is the Prince of God’s People
Daniel 10:13, 21 – “Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me... but I will show thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth, and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.”
Daniel 12:1 – “And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people.”
Michael is called "the great Prince" of God’s people.
Isaiah 9:6 calls Jesus the Prince of Peace.
Jesus is the one who defends and delivers His people, just as Michael does in Daniel 12:1.
4. The Voice of the Archangel is the Voice of Christ
1 Thessalonians 4:16 – “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God.”
The Lord (Jesus) descends from heaven with the voice of the Archangel.
This means Jesus is speaking with the voice of the archangel, showing that Michael and Jesus are the same being.
Jesus is the one who calls forth the dead (John 5:25, 28-29).
5. Jesus is the Angel of the Lord
Many times in the Old Testament, a divine being referred to as "the Angel of the Lord" speaks as God and is later identified as God Himself.
Exodus 3:2-6 – “And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush... God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses... I am the God of thy father.”
The Angel of the LORD speaks as God Himself—this is Jesus before His incarnation.
Judges 6:11-14 – Gideon sees the Angel of the LORD, yet later the LORD speaks to him directly, showing they are the same being.
Joshua 5:13-15 – Joshua meets the Captain of the Lord’s host, who tells him to remove his shoes because he is on holy ground.
This is the same command God gave to Moses in Exodus 3:5, proving this Captain is Christ.
II. Ellen G. White’s Writings on Michael as Christ
1. Michael Leads the Heavenly Armies
“It was Michael, the Archangel, who came to the aid of Gabriel when he was contending with the kings of Persia in behalf of God's people.”(Prophets and Kings, p. 572)
“Christ, as the leader of the heavenly hosts, the commander of the angels, fought against the power of Satan.”(The Desire of Ages, p. 759)
Ellen White directly connects Michael to Christ, affirming that Michael is the leader of the angels, which aligns with Revelation 12:7.
2. Jesus is the One Who Resurrected Moses
“Christ Himself, with the angels who had buried Moses, came down from heaven to call forth the sleeping saint.”(Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 479)
This matches Jude 9, where Michael is the one disputing over Moses' body, proving Michael is Christ.
3. Christ is the Angel of the Lord
“Christ was not only the leader of the Hebrews in the wilderness—the Angel in whom was the name of Jehovah, and who, veiled in the cloudy pillar, went before the host—but it was He who gave the law to Israel.”(Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 366)
Ellen White confirms that the Angel of the Lord in the Old Testament was Christ Himself.
III. Summary of the Evidence
Characteristic | Michael the Archangel | Jesus Christ |
Leader of Heaven’s Angels | Revelation 12:7 | Matthew 26:53 |
Power Over Death | Jude 9 | John 11:25 |
Prince of God’s People | Daniel 12:1 | Isaiah 9:6 |
Raises the Dead | 1 Thessalonians 4:16 | John 5:28-29 |
The Angel of the Lord | Exodus 3:2-6 | John 8:58 |
Conclusion:
Michael is not a created being but a divine title of Christ as the Commander of Heaven’s Armies.
The Angel of the Lord in the Old Testament is Jesus pre-incarnate.
Ellen White supports that Michael is another name for Christ before His human birth.
Thus, Michael the Archangel is another name for Jesus Christ, our divine Redeemer and the leader of the heavenly host.
